Landscaping Experience Across a Wide Range of Sites

No two landscaping projects are identical.

Some involve major regrading, drainage and large-scale planting. Others focus on a particular landscape feature, show garden, public space or customer-facing area.

Millstone Landscapes has experience across projects including:

  • Residential developments
  • Public parks and open spaces
  • Show homes and show gardens
  • Drainage and balancing ponds
  • Large-scale tree planting
  • Commercial developments
  • Community spaces
  • Specialist garden construction
  • Landscape establishment and maintenance

The following case studies provide examples of work completed across Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire, Wiltshire and Kent.

Balancing Pond and Landscape Drainage, Bognor Regis

Balancing pond and native planting at Bognor Regis

This project formed part of a larger drainage programme for a major local development and was delivered for three clients working as a consortium.

The works involved excavation of the pond area, including an island at one end. The site was naturally wet and the pond was designed to retain water throughout the year, fed by several culverts before ultimately connecting with the wider drainage system.

Although the pond had an important drainage function, it was also designed as a leisure area for residents.

The landscaping included:

  • More than 13,000 native tree and shrub whips
  • Wildflower seed mix to the pond banks
  • Salix planting on the island
  • Native bulbs beneath the planting
  • Integration with proposed bridges and cycle infrastructure

This is a good example of Millstone's ability to combine practical site requirements with finished public landscape areas.

Public Park Development, Thatcham

Public open space and new planting at Thatcham

Millstone Landscapes transformed a former storage and waste area into public open space intended for adoption by the local authority as part of a Section 106 agreement.

The contract exceeded £900,000 and took approximately 18 months to complete.

Works included:

  • Extensive drainage installation
  • Re-soiling and grading
  • Tree and whip planting
  • Hydroseeding
  • Playground installation
  • Swale construction
  • Buffer-bank formation
  • More than 12,000 trees and whips planted along the bund

The site then entered a two-year maintenance period before handover to the local authority.

For this new housing development, Millstone Landscapes constructed an ornamental pond as part of the wider landscaping works.

The project involved:

  • Pond excavation
  • Liner installation
  • Rock placement
  • Access bridge construction
  • Planting
  • Fountain installation

The finished pond formed part of the route leading towards the show homes.

Show Garden, Devizes

Show garden design and planting at Devizes

Millstone Landscapes created a show garden for a new-build development in Devizes, Wiltshire.

The brief required a low-maintenance garden that would still provide visual interest within a relatively confined space.

The entire project was completed in four days.

Housing Development Garden, Haslemere

Terraced decking in a development garden at Haslemere

This garden formed part of a new housing development where the original layout presented a challenge for the developer.

The garden included a steep bank that made the space impractical and had become a concern for prospective purchasers.

Millstone Landscapes terraced the garden using low-maintenance decking, creating a more usable outdoor seating and entertaining area.

The property sold shortly after the landscaping work was completed.

Midhurst Hospital Garden

Landscaped garden at Midhurst Hospital

Millstone Landscapes created a new garden for Midhurst Hospital in West Sussex.

The space was designed to provide an outdoor environment where people could sit or walk within the landscaped garden.

Nursery School Outdoor Play Area, Bognor Regis

This project involved landscaping an outdoor area for a nursery school in Bognor Regis.

The completed garden was designed to provide an outdoor environment suitable for children to play in.

Large-Scale Shelterbelt Planting, Sittingbourne

Shelterbelt tree planting at Sittingbourne

Millstone Landscapes completed a substantial shelterbelt planting project on a development in Sittingbourne, Kent.

The scheme involved planting approximately 21,000 trees.

The wider works included:

  • Major regrading
  • Land drainage into soakaways
  • Formation of screening banks
  • Erosion protection using woven coconut matting
  • Extensive tree planting

A five-year maintenance programme was initially approved and was subsequently extended for a further five years.

The project budget exceeded £400,000.

35-Acre Landscaping Project, West Tytherley

Landscaped grounds at West Tytherley

This substantial landscaping project in West Tytherley, Hampshire involved preparing proposals for a large site where an existing farmhouse was being replaced by a six-bedroom manor house.

Millstone Landscapes transformed the areas surrounding the new property with:

  • Terraced lawns
  • Indian stone patios
  • A vegetable garden
  • Ornamental borders
  • More than 5,000 tree whips to create native woodland
  • A tree-lined driveway
  • Consolidated path gravel

The project took approximately five months to complete and was finished on time.

Contemporary Landscaping, Basingstoke

Contemporary planted borders at Alencon House, Basingstoke

For the Sky Plazza apartment development in Basingstoke, Millstone Landscapes delivered a design-and-build landscaping scheme to complement the conversion of an office building into residential apartments.

The scheme incorporated contemporary materials and included:

  • Stainless-steel-clad retaining borders
  • LED lighting
  • Recycled shredded rubber mulch
  • Mulch matting
  • Underground irrigation
  • Topiary planting using Buxus

The landscaping was designed to reflect the contemporary redevelopment of the building itself.

Japanese Garden, Kingswood

Millstone Landscapes created a Japanese-style garden in Kingswood, Surrey.

The project received a National Landscape Award from the British Association of Landscape Industries.

New Allotments, Durrington

New raised allotments built in Durrington

Millstone Landscapes designed and constructed 20 new allotments for residents in Durrington.

The existing allotments were being incorporated into a proposed housing development, so replacement facilities were required.

The project involved consultation with the Parish Council and existing allotment holders before construction began.

Works included:

  • Major soil regrading
  • Soil screening
  • Compost addition
  • Raised timber allotments
  • Gravel pathways
  • Water troughs
  • Benches
  • Chain-link fencing
  • Climbers and hedging
  • Fruit-tree planting

The work was completed before the required deadline, allowing the developer's wider construction programme to move forward earlier than expected.

Proven Experience on Large Development Schemes

Millstone's wider project history also includes large residential and mixed-use developments.

For example, Millstone was appointed to landscaping phases at King Edward VII Estate in Midhurst, including planting based on the historic Gertrude Jekyll-inspired landscape associated with the site.

The company has also worked on significant schemes including Green Park Village in Reading, where landscaping included thousands of new plants and trees around new residential areas and public spaces.

These examples demonstrate the range of environments in which Millstone has worked, from individual landscape features to large multi-phase developments.
